Brookfield Institute to hold songwriters workshop

BROOKFIELD - The Brookfield Institute is holding its second annual workshop for would-be songwriters on Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5 at the Brookfield Inn, 8 W. Main St. People who may have tried to write a scrap of a song, but canÕt seem to finish it or musicians who love to play, but havenÕt tried their hand at composition would enjoy this workshop, as well as composers who want to hone their skills or learn new ways of creating.

Tret Fure, successful folksinger and songwriter, will lead the workshop, teaching participants to explore Òthe power of word in song, through condensing, compressing, and fine-tuning to make strong songs.Ó This workshop will cover song structure and word choice through a series of writing exercises, both as individuals and in community.

The Brookfield Institute, an organization focused on healing the person, the community and the earth, is hosting an artistÕs series in order to cultivate and nurture imagination in communities. Creativity and imagination build resilience and are tools in healing.

Annie Delaney-Magee, a novice songwriter from Dudley, spoke about last yearÕs workshop. ÒParticipating in the songwriterÕs workshop was like stepping out of the practical desert and into a creative oasis! It was wonderful to talk about how to turn life experience into art. Tret gave us a technical analysis of effective songwriting technique Ð then illustrated the concepts by singing songs of great beauty that made us cry. Tret was inviting, confident, good at moving the discussions along, and quick to laugh and share her joy in music. She created a safe space to let our inner-geeks roar. I will certainly remember this experience as one of great happiness, and look forward to another opportunity to do it again!Ó

To register for the workshop, go to www.brookfieldinstitute.org/events.html or email the Brookfield Institute at Brookfield.institute@gmail.com or call 508-637-1215. The workshop will run on Friday, June 4 from 7 Ð 9 p.m. and Saturday, June 5 from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. A free ÒhouseÓ concert will conclude the weekend on Sunday, June 6 at 3 p.m.
