Friday, Aug. 6
QUABOAG POND TO GET TREATMENT Quaboag Pond in Brookfield and East Brookfield will be chemically treated with a USEPA/MA registered algaecide to control nuisance algae Friday, Aug. 6. The entire pond will be closed to swimming and other water contact activities on the day of each treatment. Printed signs will be posted around the pond shoreline and should remain in place until Saturday, Aug. 7. The work is being performed for the Quaboag-Quacumquasit Lake Association (QQLA) pursuant to a License to Apply Chemicals permit from MA DEP. Aquatic Control Technology, Inc., of Sutton, is the State Licensed Company performing the treatments.
AN NRA PISTOL SAFETY AND MARKSMANSHIP COURSE WILL BE HELD at the Quaboag SportsmenÕs Club, 451 Dunham Road, off Route 19 in Warren from 7 Ð 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Attendance is limited to 12 persons, and pre-registration is required with a non-refundable deposit of $40. Successful completion of the course and the examination will enable an adult to apply for a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms. Students should bring a lunch on Saturday; soft drinks may be purchased at the range. Be sure to bring rain gear in case of inclement weather; shooting exercises are held outdoors. Do not bring a firearm or ammunition to the classes, and please note that no alcohol or drugs are allowed on club property at any time. The $80 tuition covers all training materials, ammunition, and the use of a firearm, safety glasses and hearing protection. GILBERT PLAYERS WILL OPEN THEIR NEW SEASON The season opener, "A Berlely Square Cafe" that will be a highlight of the summer. The Cabaret will be in the small intimate Kresge Studio Theater set up with tables filled with hot coffee, chilled wines, fine beers and unlimited rich deserts. WARREN POKER RUN TO BENEFIT CHILDRENÕS JINGLE FUND will be held at St. StanÕs Polish Club in West Warren. The Jingle Fund helps families financially around the holidays and during the summer they provide scholarships for children that could not otherwise afford to attend summer camp. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The ride leaves the club at 10:30 a.m. The chicken barbeque will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m. Moral Dilemma, a live band from Monson will provide entertainment. THE 2ND ANNUAL BARRE FIREFIGHERS SOFTBALL BENEFIT WILL BE HELD at Felton Field, Old Coldbrook Rd., Barre. The event will begin promptly at 9 a.m. at Felton Field. The Lions Club will sell food and the Barre Fire Department will sell cotton candy and popcorn. The Junior Firefighters will have a mini-muster for the children to try out. Higgins Motor Sport, Route 122, Barre, will have a tent set up with equipment. Tom Hallgren, airbrush tattoo artist and face paint artists, Jen Ellis and Carina Walker, will offer their talents for the children and adults. The band Ryde, well known as a premier southern rock and blues band, is scheduled to play that evening at Coldbrook Country Club, Old Coldbrook Road at 9 p.m., following the softball event at Felton Field.
HEART TO HEART FOUNDATION WILL HOLD 2ND ANNUAL POKER RUN in memory of Kevin Madore, to benefit people with chronic diseases. BROOKFIELD WILL HOLD ITS ÒHISTORIC DAYÓ Events will include a photo contest, scavenger hunt, speakers and tours. The contest photo, depicting ÒThe Heart of BrookfieldÓ must be submitted by the person who took it, need not be recent. Entries from any year are allowed. QUABBIN COMMUNITY BAND TO PRESENT ÔSOME OF THIS AND SOME OF THATÕon Sunday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m., at the Harding
Allen Bandstand, on the Barre Common. All ages are sure to enjoy the variety of
composers including Percy Grainger, Johnnie Vinson and Leroy Anderson as the
QCB brings their music alive. The public is invited to continue the long
standing tradition of enjoying wonderful music at sunset for free, with
donations graciously accepted. Rain location is the Barre Town Hall, also on
the common. Refreshments including light dinners and various goodies will be
sold by Kim St. Denis, with all proceeds to benefit the continued operation of
QCB. The Barre LionsÕ Club will also have a table set up accepting donations of
non-perishable food items for the Barre Food Bank through the remainder of the
concert series.

EAST BROOKFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER OF SERVICE PROGRAM It will run from Aug. 9 Ð 13. S.O.S. (Summer of Service) is a community outreach program of area churches based at the East Brookfield Baptist Church in East Brookfield. Adults and teens from area churches will fan out across our communities and perform various types of home improvement from painting to yard work. The program is designed to assist local residents in completing projects around their homes that they do not have the time or money to complete. LAKE WICKABOAG MAY GET TREATMENT The Lake Wickaboag Preservation Association, along with the West Brookfield Board of Health, has announced that if hot weather continues and there is a return of algae growth, the lake will receive a total lake algaecide treatment. Lycott Environmental, the contractor hired by the Board of Health to apply the algaecide treatment, has requested that swimming, fishing and boating in the lake be suspended for the Aug. 11 surface water treatment. There are no other restrictions associated with livestock watering, direct drinking and irrigation. Members of LWPA will notify boaters and swimmers by placing signs on streets leading to the lake and by placing red flag buoys on the lake. As part of their education program, they will also send a reminder to residents through the local cable access channel before the application begins.

THE HARDWICK FAIR WILL BE HELD ON THE WEEKEND OF AUG. 20 AND 21 on the town common in Hardwick. The Fair is a place where old-timers and newcomers gather to renew old friendships and acquaintances; many traveling great distances. It is a traditional Colonial-style country fair with an agricultural theme. The common has a variety of activities; many free and others inexpensive, bringing together a blend of old and new. It's a family event where children can enjoy themselves and so can their parents, without emptying their pockets. Check out the kids-only section, like the frog jumping competition. Other buildings around the common display art, photography, and crafts created by local folks. The Old Town Hall has displays of baked goods, flowers and vegetables, all competing for the illusive blue ribbon. The Fair culminates in an auction of all perishable exhibits, where even "Aunt Mable's Blue Ribbon-winning blueberry cake" goes to the highest bidder.

WARREN ÔFAMILY FUN DAYÕ WILL BE HELD AT DEAN PARK from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 (raindate: Aug. 29). Fireworks to celebrate the 350th Anniversary of the Quaboag Plantation will be held at Quaboag Regional Middle-High School on Aug. 28 (raindate: Aug. 29). There will be musical entertainment from 6 - 8:30 p.m., with fireworks to follow. The musical entertainment is supported in part by a grant from the Warren Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

THE QUABOAG PLANTATION 350TH ANNIVERSARY PARADE will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 in West Brookfield. The Brookfield division will lead the parade. The parade committee (for all six towns) has given us a deadline of April 15 for parade entries. We'd like to have as many participants as possible.
THE WEST BROOKFIELD SENIOR CENTER IS LOOKING FOR CRAFTERS FOR THEIR FALL FEST The senior center will host the annual Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 25 Ð a fun day for all. THE QUABOAG 350TH COMMITTEE IS PLANNING THE LAWN MOWER/TRACTOR PARADE to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2. This fun filled event will consist of a parade around the common, tractor races, tractor pulling, decorating themes and several events for children. This all day event will be bigger than ever and the committee is looking for people from the surrounding 350th Quaboag Plantation towns, who are also celebrating this historic event, to join in the planning and assisting in this event. LASHAWAY SENIORS ARE TAKING A TRIP TO PENNSYLVANIA AMISH LAND The Lashaway Senior Citizens are sponsoring a lovely trip to PennsylvaniaÕs Amish land from Oct. 5 - 8.
