NORTH BROOKFIELD SAVINGS, BAYSTATE MEDICAL CENTER WILL SPONSOR A BLOOD DRIVE from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. All blood donations will be taken inside the Baystate Bloodmobile located in the parking lot at the Palmer branch of North Brookfield Savings Bank at 1051 Thorndike Street, Palmer.

The Baystate Bloodmobile will be giving out Free Big E tickets to all donors and North Brookfield Savings Bank will give a free shopping tote for anyone who attends the blood drive and attempts to donate blood.

THE BROOKFIELD RECREATION COMMISSION WILL HOLD A ÔFAMILY FUN DAYÕ from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lewis Field, Rte. 148, Main and Prouty St. in Brookfield. All are invited to attend this annual Family Fun Day. An adult softball game will be held. There will be food, games and fun for everyone! Admission is free. Come and enjoy the day. NORTH BROOKFIELD SPORTSMENÕS CLUB WILL HOLD THEIR ANNUAL DROVERÕS ROAST at the club, 20 Boynton Road, North Brookfield, rain or shine. Activities, entertainment and hayrides start at 2 p.m. with dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased in advance. WARREN ÔFAMILY FUN DAYÕ WILL BE HELD AT DEAN PARK from noon to 5 p.m. Raindate: Aug. 29. Fireworks to celebrate the 350th Anniversary of the Quaboag Plantation will be held at Quaboag Regional Middle-High School on Aug. 28 (raindate: Aug. 29). There will be musical entertainment from 6 - 8:30 p.m., with fireworks to follow. The musical entertainment is supported in part by a grant from the Warren Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

LAKE LASHAWAY DRAWDOWN WILL TAKE PLACE SEPT. 7 The board of selectmen is advising residents that the the lake will be lowered to 8 to 10 inches below its normal level. Boats, docks and other lakeside appurtenances that might be affected by the drawdown must be removed by then.

 

CUB SCOUT PACK 118 OF WEST BROOKFIELD WILL HOLD ITS ANNUAL REGISTRATION for new and returning scouts on Saturday, Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon and on Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration will be held in the West Brookfield Elementary School cafeteria on both days. 7TH ANNUAL USO BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT WILL BE HELD at Bay Path Golf Course, 193 North Brookfield Road, East Brookfield, on Saturday, Sept. 4. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. and there will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The format will be a 4-person Callaway. The USO is a private, non-governmental organization dedicated to volunteer support of our active duty and reserve troops and their families through various morale support activities. Put together a team and come out and play. Just enter at Bay Path Golf Course. The fee is $280 per foursome or $70 per player and includes 18 holes of golf and a meal afterwards. Golf carts are extra and need to be reserved with Bay Path GC ahead of time on a first-come-first-served basis. Singles are welcome and we can help you get teammates. THE CRITTER SECOND CHANCE POKER RUN WILL BE HELD SEPT. 5 The starting point is at the Knights of Columbus on Rt. 9 in Ware. Registration for the ride is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus. The ride is a scenic 63-mile ride beginning and ending at the K of C. (See map on the shelterÕs website at www.secondchanceanimals.org). In addition to the ride, there will be raffles, a silent auction throughout the day and a chicken barbecue from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance. The barbecue is also included in the ride tickets. Enjoy the Rob Adams Blues Band Jam from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Musicians are welcome to come and join in. Bikes are not necessary to come and enjoy the day. The rider fee is $20 (includes barbecue) and the passenger fee is $15 (includes barbecue). The fee for the barbecue only is $15.

THE HASTON PUBLIC LIBRARY WILL HOLD A WEEKLY PLAY GROUP FOR WORKING MOMS Beginning Monday, Sept. 13, from 6 - 7 p.m., the library will host a weekly play group for 1-3 year-olds, directed by Matti Sjoblom. As a working mother herself, Matti wanted her son to enjoy the social, emotional and physical development that children can have in an atmosphere of loosely-structured fun. This hour will provide time for you to bond with your children with time to play, listen to stories, build things and sing together. Pre-registration is required in order to get materials ahead of time for small projects. The play group is open to all at no charge. NORTH BROOKFIELD VFW POST 3439 WILL HOST A 5K WOUNDED WARRIOR RUN/WALK on Saturday, Sept. 18. The start time is 9 a.m. and will begin at 11 Maple St. North Brookfield. The entrance fee is $10 for the general public and $7 for Armed Forces personnel or Veterans. Race day registrations welcome, same rates apply. All proceeds will be split between the VFW Relief Fund and the Fisher House for wounded warriors. Awards will be given to first female and first male, first female veteran and first male veteran, and youngest runner. VFW Post 3439 will host a chicken BBQ at 11 a.m. The cost of the BBQ is $8 for the general public and free for the contestants. THE QUABOAG PLANTATION 350TH ANNIVERSARY PARADE will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 in West Brookfield. The Brookfield division will lead the parade.  The parade committee (for all six towns) has given us a deadline of April 15 for parade entries. Please let us know at brookfieldquaboag2010@gmail.com  if you plan to make a float, march as a group, drive a vehicle or otherwise participate in the parade.  We'd like to have as many participants as possible.

 

THE WEST BROOKFIELD SENIOR CENTER IS LOOKING FOR CRAFTERS FOR THEIR FALL FEST The senior center will host the annual Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 25 Ð a fun day for all. As part of the planned festivities we are inviting any and all crafters who would like to be a part of the special day. AN NRA BASIC PISTOL AND MARKSMANSHIP COURSE WILL BE OFFERED to the public at the Quaboag SportsmenÕs Club, 451 Dunham Road, off Rte 19 in Warren on Friday, Sept. 24 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Attendance is limited to 12 persons, and pre-registration is required, with a non-refundable deposit of $40. Successful completion of the two-session course and the examination will enable an adult to apply for a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms. Students should bring a lunch on Saturday; soft drinks may be purchased at the club. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing in case of inclement weather; shooting exercises are held outdoors. Do not bring a firearm or ammunition to the classes, and please note that no alcohol or drugs are allowed on club property at any time. The $80 tuition covers all training materials, and the use of a firearm, ammunition, safety glasses and hearing protection. THE QUABOAG 350TH COMMITTEE IS PLANNING THE LAWN MOWER/TRACTOR PARADE to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2. This fun filled event will consist of a parade around the common, tractor races, tractor pulling, decorating themes and several events for children. This all day event will be bigger than ever and the committee is looking for people from the surrounding 350th Quaboag Plantation towns, who are also celebrating this historic event, to join in the planning and assisting in this event. SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL SHELTER WILL HOLD THEIR 10TH ANNUAL WALK NÕWAG on Sunday, Oct. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club on 24 Hamilton Road in Sturbridge. Registration begins at 10:30, walk begins at 12:15. A special reunion photograph for Second Chance adoptees will be taken at 11:45. It is an event that is fun for both dog and humans alike. And whatÕs best, it all benefits the homeless pets that Second Chance Animal Shelter in East Brookfield helps. Animal lovers come to enjoy the canine demonstrations, educational booths, compete in the doggie contests, auction/raffles, food, the Òdoggie boutiqueÓ loaded with lots of great stuff for both pet and human alike, vegan food, a chicken barbecue (advance tickets required) - and more food, fun and entertainment.

 

LASHAWAY SENIORS ARE TAKING A TRIP TO PENNSYLVANIA AMISH LAND The Lashaway Senior Citizens are sponsoring a lovely trip to PennsylvaniaÕs Amish land from Oct. 5 - 8. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR NORTH BROOKFIELD SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH COMMITTEE The school committee is looking for volunteers to serve on a search committee for the superintendent position. The committee would include one student, one or two parents of North Brookfield students, and one or two residents who are not parents of students, in addition to some school personnel. MERRICK PUBLIC LIBRARY IS OFFERING HOME DELIVERY SERVICE The service is available every Friday at 3 p.m. Please keep this service in mind as you contemplate parking during construction. COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE DEATH OF A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND ARE INVITED to attend the GriefShare program. This nondenominational program features Biblical teaching that focuses on encouragement and comfort in grieving. GriefShare will be held from every Thursday through Nov. 11 at the E. MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVERS ARE NEEDED FOR BROOKFIELD AREA

Tri-Valley, Inc. is looking for reliable people to deliver Meals on Wheels to elders in Brookfield. Meals are packed and delivered out of the North Brookfield Nutrition Site located at the Senior Center. All volunteers receive training and drivers are eligible for travel reimbursement at the rate of 45.5 cents per mile. Anyone who can give as little as two hours per week of their time to help with this important task is asked to call the North Brookfield Nutrition Site at 508-867-0220 or Tri-ValleyÕs office at 1-800-286-6640.


WARREN PUBLIC LIBRARY NOW HAS ANCESTRY RESOURCES
Access to Ancestry.com, the worldÕs largest online family history resource, is now available free at the Warren Public Library. Millions of records from many, many sources can be reviewed. U. S. census records from 1790 to 1930, census records 1841-1901 from England, and 1861 to 1911 records from Canada. Also, immigration and emigration records, ship passenger lists from Ellis Island to New Orleans and California; military records from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII; Family trees; birth, death and marriage records, court, land and financial records of ancestors; maps, atlases and gazetteers; photos and images. This brand new database subscription is available in the library for one year. HOST FAMILIES ARE NEEDED FOR INTERNATIONAL FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS for the fall semester or the academic school year. Exchange students are 15 to 18 years-old and are from 15 different countries. All speak English, are fully insured medically, bring their own spending money and would attend your local high school. Host families are asked to provide a loving home, meals and emotional support. THE BROOKFIELD HISTORICAL COMMISSION NEEDS VOLUNTEERS who are interested in indexing, filing, geneology research- including Revolutionary and Civil War records and re-typing of short documents and essays into electronic medium for our files. We also need help in cleaning brush and leaves from the area around the "Town Pound" and other historic markers and sites. MERRICK PUBLIC LIBRARY ASKS PERSONS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING OR DONATING A VEHICLE for the Founding Fathers of the Merrick Public Library and local author Mary Jane Holmes themed segment in the 350th Quaboag Plantation Anniversary Parade are welcome to call or stop by the library. The March of History Parade is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 19 at noon.

 

MERRICK PUBLIC LIBRARY ADULT COMPUTER TIME will continue on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Gale databases links are now available on the blog and website. The link is direct and simplified with no need for a password as long as you are in the state of Massachusetts. These sites provide research to magazines, journals, books, encyclopedias and newspapers.

THE QUABOAG HIGHLANDERS PIPES AND DRUMS OF MONSON ARE LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS beginners or experienced, in preparation for its 2010-2011 parade season. Rehearsals are every Tuesday night at the Daley Hall building in the Monson Developmental Center, located on State Avenue at the Palmer/Monson line. No fee necessary. THE MERRIAM-GILBERT LIBRARY WILL HOST A TODDLER PLAY GROUP for infants and toddlers up to 3 years old, in West Brookfield. THE CHRIST MEMORIAL EPISCOPAL CHURCH HOLDS A CRAFTING GROUP on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, from 6 Ð 8 p.m. Located on the corner of Main and Spring St. in North Brookfield. A group of amateur crafters are getting together for fun and to learn from each other. Anyone interested in joining the bi-monthly craft sessions is invited. West Brookfield Walks! every Tuesday. Meet us at the Merriam-Gilbert Library at 8:15 a.m. or the walking school bus can pick you up on the way. We will be traveling from the library down North Main St. to the elementary school. Principal Colleen Mucha will be leading and we will be having surprise special guests. BEDTIME SNACKS: A FAMILY STORY NIGHT the third Tuesday of each month from 7-7:30 p.m. in the ChildrenÕs Room at the Merriam-Gilbert Public Library. Each month a different beloved children's classic will be introduced. The library will supply the milk and cookies - participants are welcome to bring a favorite blanket and pillow to make themselves cozy. Additional copies of the book will be available for check-out, to finish reading the story together at home. A great family activity, reading together encourages literacy and exposes children to the deep enjoyment a book can provide.

 

The Quaboag Historical Society Museum, Front Street, in West Brookfield will be open each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special visitations will continue to be available by appointment by calling 508-867-5428. Admission is free.

 

American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in Ware from 1-7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Ware Senior Center on 1 Robbins Road (behind Cumberland Farms). To ensure less time waiting, call The Red Cross at 800-GIVE LIFE for your appointment to donate. You must be at least 17 years old, 110 pounds and in good general health. Please bring ID. The need for blood is constant.

 

North Brookfield Cub Scouts are looking for experienced uniforms. These are uniforms in good condition that a former Cub Scout is not using any more. They can be turned in to Bob LaFlamme at Crowley Fuel office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

THE MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM is in desperate need of volunteers to deliver meals to seniors in North Brookfield on Wednesdays. SOUTHBRIDGE INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK, Grace House, Sayles Street in Southbridge needs the following donated items: microwaves (2), sofa, blankets, pots and pans, dishes and cups, small end tables, size 6 (girls) summer clothes. Two of the families from Grace House have been able to move out and are in need of a few items.
